The building is known as the birthplace of the National genius, born on March 21st, 1846, Raphael Augusto Prostes Bordallo Pinheiro is known mostly for his satirical character of social criticism, Zé-Povinho ('The average Joe'), which represented a caricature of the Portuguese people.

But Bordallo Pinheiro was much more than that: engraving journalist, pencil leafleted, graphic chronicler, ceramist, cartoonist, teacher, draftsman, water-colour artist, illustrator and more.
